Behavioral medicine has a long history of major contributions to healthcare both through treatment and prevention. Behavioral Medicine integrates the mind and body as a whole. Separating physical and mental health factors can lead to traumatic experiences for patients. It is easy to see that chronic physical pain causes mental health distress and that mental health distress can cause real physical pain. Research has repeatedly validated the effect of mental health factors on serious medical conditions. Therefore, in order to successfully treat patients, health care providers must address both the mental and physical aspects of medical conditions. This multidisciplinary approach serves as a framework to guide clinical evaluation, identify barriers to work re-entry, develop targeted interventions to reduce the impact of these barriers and provide rehabilitation services.
